Yahoo! pipe for mashing up data from 2 different of NCBI’s databases
Here’s what I rigged together for mashing up data using Yahoo!Pipes and NCBI’s E-Utilities REST web-services.
Say for example that you go to the starting page of the NCBI portal, and from the drop-down “Search” menu you select the “Protein” database and search for the term “hsp” (heat shock proteins). Select the very first hit from the list, AAZ73229 for which also a screeshot is below :

Notice were I have the red circle where you get the article reference for that protein, though you have to follow the PUBMED link in order to read the abstract (and thus get more details) about the research that this biological molecule was involved. By using Yahoo!Pipes and NCBI’s E-Utilities, I mashup some of the content returned for this protein seen above, with the content that’s available for the article (the abstract to be more specific). In this way I bring everything nicely together in an RSS feed where you see the protein information along with article tittle and abstract, without having to follow the PUBMED link. Of course the advantage of the data being in RSS is that they can be embedded in many places (like other blogs or webpages) and also processed even further. Here are the the results of the mashup the pipe does using the “hsp” search term:

This pipe can be modified easily for which additional content to be included in the output RSS feed, and is available here if you’d like to give it a try using your own search terms….
